From my experience in seeing patients with nose and sinus problems, many people do not know some very important facts about the medications they are taking without a doctor's prescription (i.e., over-the-counter). The following facts are some of the most common misconceptions and could help you from important for you to know. See how facts many you know (or thought you knew!). 1. Afrin can be used to stop nosebleeds. Afrin, the trade name for the nasal decongestant spray, oxymetazoline, is known for relieving trouble breathing from the nose; however, the agents has been used for years to help stop nosebleeds and is even used during nose and sinus surgeries. 2. Nasal steroid sprays (such as Flonase and Nasacort) take up to 6 weeks for the maximum effect! Nasal steroid sprays are very helpful for nasal allergy symptoms, but they need time to work. They should be used every day for at least 6 weeks to see how well they will work for you. 3. Nasal decongestant sprays (such as Afrin, 4-Way, etc.) can be "addictive" to your nose. There is even a condition named after this problem. Rhinitis medicamentosa is a condition in which your nose becomes dependent on nasal decongestant sprays. If you have had this problem in the past, you know how miserable it can be! Hope these facts help you!
