Two people in Louisiana died from an infection with a "brain-eating" amoeba
after using Neti-Pot irrigations with tap water. Nasal saline irrigation has
been used for thousands of years and continues to provide symptomatic relief to
patients with sinusitis. This event highlights the absolute importance of using
either sterile water or boiling water if used from a water faucet tap prior to
using it for nasal saline irrigations. It is also important to wash your
irrigation bottle or container frequently to prevent cross-contamination. See LA
Times news article here.
