What Is the Septal Swell Body?

The septal swell body is a normal, thickened area of tissue located on the nasal septum, typically found just above the anterior portion of the inferior turbinates. Although often overlooked, it plays an important role in regulating nasal airflow and humidifying the air we breathe.

The septal swell body can expand and contract, much like the turbinates, in response to environmental factors, allergens, or inflammation.

Functions of the Septal Swell Body:

  • Helps regulate airflow through the nasal passages
  • Contributes to humidifying and warming inhaled air
  • Responds to allergens and irritants, sometimes enlarging as a result

When the Septal Swell Body Becomes a Problem:
In some individuals, the SSB becomes enlarged (hypertrophic), which can contribute to nasal obstruction. This can occur independently or alongside a deviated septum or enlarged inferior turbinates.

Symptoms of Septal Swell Body Hypertrophy:

  • Chronic nasal congestion
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Reduced response to decongestants
